Wanda Nephew

Wanda Jo Nephew age 72 of Ludington, passed away on November 10, 2013 at Spectrum Health-Ludington Hospital. She was born June 4, 1941 in Oklahoma City, OK daughter of the late Robert V. and Mary E. (Hoard) Bybee.
She moved to the Ludington area as a young child and lived in Carr Settlement, Scottville and Ludington. Wanda attended Scottville High School and graduated from the first Registered Nurse program at West Shore Community College and worked as an RN for Memorial Medical Center for 23 years. She married Dale Miller in 1967 and he preceded her in death in 2002. Wanda met Frank Nephew and they were married on August 14, 2003.
Wanda is survived by her husband: Frank Nephew of Ludington; sons: Robert Miller of Florida; John Miller of Alabama; two adopted daughters: Cheryl Slack of Alma; and Kathi Kirkpatrick of the U.P., a half-sister and half-brother along with nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband: Dale Miller, daughter: Annette Miller, sister: Della J. Bybee, brother: Bobby L. Bybee.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the donor’s charity of choice.
Final interment will take place at Lakeview Cemetery in Ludington at a later date.

Clarence Genson

Clarence M. (Skinny) Genson, 91, of Ludington, Michigan went home to be with the Lord on Saturday morning, November 16, 2013. He was born in Victory Township on August 9, 1922 to the late Warren W. and Agnes (Osborn) Genson. He graduated from Ludington High School with the class of 1941. He and Mable McClure were married on October 16, 1944. Clarence proudly served his country during World War II as part of the 276th Engineer Combat Battalion. As a returning veteran, he moved homes for Herman Outcault, built homes for Glen Bowden, and finally, worked for Dow Chemical Company for approximately 30 years as a carpenter. His carpentry skills extended into his private life as well, building three homes for his own family, and later helping son Dennis build his home. This carried on one more generation as he assisted son Dennis in making several renovations to granddaughter Sarah’s home. Clarence loved to hunt, fish, and build, make, or fix just about anything. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Ludington and was also a member of the Elks and the Eagles.
He will be greatly missed by those who survived him, son: Dennis (Karen) Genson of Ludington, daughter: Pam (Jim) Bell of Florida; several grandchildren: Samuel (Kirsten) Genson of Indiana, Sarah Genson of Ludington, Barb (Rich) Skultety of New Jersey, Douglas Bell of Missouri, and Amy Byerley of Grand Rapids, Michigan; great-grandchildren: Grace and Sawyer Genson and Maddie and Ben Skultety; a sister: Betty Boulton of Ludington and brothers: Harry Genson of Newaygo, Michigan and Robert (Beverly) Genson of California; many cousins, nieces, and nephews (including one little great-niece, MacKenzie, that had a special place in his heart), and many friends. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Agnes and Warren Genson, his wife, Mable, his sisters, Geneva (Evar) Carlson, Margaret Pendleton, and Agnes “Sis” (Tom) Rathsack, his brothers: Benjamin Genson and Wallace Genson, along with his daughter-in-law: Cynthia Genson.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, November 22, 2013 at the United Methodist Church in Ludington with the Reverend Dennis Bromley officiating. Friends may meet with Clarence’s family for visitation on Friday morning at the church from 10:00 am until the time of service. There will be a committal service immediately following at Lakeview Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Clarence’s name be made to the United Methodist Church of Ludington Building Fund.

Shirley Palko

Shirley June Palko, age 81 of Onekama, died Sunday morning December 1, 2013 at Country Acres Adult Foster Care in Kaleva.

She was born June 25, 1932 in Detroit the daughter of the late Walter Frank and Stella (Czarkowski) Lekki. On September 1, 1951 Shirley married Louis Palko in Detroit; he preceded her in death on February 26, 2012. She loved to cook and spend time with her grandkids.

Shirley is survived by 4 sons, Dennis (Linda) Palko of Clinton Township, Michael (Debra) of Kaleva, Robert (Laura) Palko of Westland, Daniel Palko of Bear Lake; 6 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lorraine McPhee and Bernadine Grudzien.

Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Onekama with Father Ruben Munoz, Celebrant.

Jack Lauber Jr.

Jack Albert Lauber Jr. age 71 of Custer, MI, passed away on January 20, 2014 at Mercy Hospital in Muskegon, MI. He was born December 13, 1942 the son of the late Jack and Gladys Lauber. Jack attended Pentwater High School graduating with the class of 1961. He married Sally Marie O’Brien on October 24, 1964 in Walkerville, MI. Jack enjoyed the oil and gas field, and was employed in the field for 60+ years. He started his career working with his father and the family business Jacks Well Service. Jack went on to work for Miller Brothers for some 19 years and then on to Phoenix Operation as a consultant where he retired in 2012. He was an avid NASCAR fan and drag racing fan, but Jack put his family first as he loved to spend time with his loving family. Jack is survived by his wife; Sally Lauber, sons; Tom (Cara Seeback) Lauber, Jeff (Theresa) Lauber, daughters; Lorie (Mark) Ruszkowski, Cherri (Mark) Jensen, Berthanada (Benjamin Gaultney) Lauber, Sisters; Anna Smith, Donna (Gordon) Terryn, 20 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service for Jack will be Saturday January 25, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Oak Grove Funeral Home with Pastor Seth Bush officiating. Ronald Lee Duggan Ronald Lee Duggan, age 70 of Custer, passed away after a one year battle with cancer on Friday February 14, 2014 at home surrounded by his family. He was born on February 21, 1943 in Custer, son of William M. Duggan and Pearl E. (Saxton) Skow. On February 20 1965 Ronald married Donna Jean Morell at the Sugar Ridge Church of the Brethren in Custer. Ron was a foreman at the Mason County Road Commission, and had been working there for the past 30 years. He also worked for Joe Sanders Meats, Hardman Construction, Town’s Brothers and at the Ludington Pump Storage Plant. He was a member of the West Michigan Old Engine Club and Operating and Engineers Local 324. Family is what was most important to Ron if he wasn’t working you would find him side-by-side with a friend or with his sons. One of his many pleasures was hosting an annual pig roast with his wife Donna and son Brian to be able to reminisce with family and friends. Ron enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends and family, restoring and pulling Allis Chalmers antique tractors and logging with draft horses with good friend Duane Tyndall. He was an avid racer who enjoyed racing and doing demolition derby’s with his sons Rich and Brian. Ron is survived by his wife, Donna Duggan of Custer; son, Brian (Ida) Duggan of Custer; mother, Pearl Skow of Cadillac; sister, Joyce Carlson of Cadillac; daughter-in-law, Tammy Fisk of Arcadia; 2 sisters-in-law, Rosemary Duggan of Ludington and Lucille Baker of Custer; brother-in-law, Melvin (Nancy) Morell of Scottville; grandchildren, Justin and Kaci Duggan both of Ludington, Matthew (Elizabeth) Huizinga of Comstock Park, Amanda Franquist of Mt. Pleasant and Amber Huizinga of Custer; step-granddaughter, Shawnee (Max) Chapa of Ludington; great-grandchildren, Landon Duggan-Jones of Ludington and Blake Franquist of Mt. Pleasant; and his 4 legged buddy, Corey. He is preceded in death by his father, William Duggan; son, Rich Duggan; step-father, Henry Skow; brother, Gary Duggan; and brother-in-laws, Roger Baker and Pete Carlson. Helen May Gaskell, age 88 of Ludington, passed away on Monday February 17, 2014 at Spectrum Health – Ludington Hospital. She was born on May 26, 1925 in Detroit, daughter of the late William and Hazel (Rehfield) Schultz. Helen attended Chadsey High School in Detroit, graduating with the class of 1943. She married Marlin Richard “Dick” Gaskell on October 4, 1952. He preceded her in death on May 8, 1997. Helen was a loving homemaker, who enjoyed spending time with family and friends and loved to write hand written letters. She attended the Community Church in Ludington for many years and faith was an important part of her life. Helen is survived by her daughter, Sue (John) Vengen of Ludington; grandson, Michael Vengen of Grand Rapids; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gale and Dorothy Downes of Dearborn; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband “Dick”; 2 sisters; 3 brothers-in-law; 2 sisters-in-law; and a nephew. Funeral services for Helen will be held at 11:00AM on Thursday February 20, 2014 at Oak Grove Funeral Home with Reverend John Brown officiating. Vivian Lynn Cruson, age 64 of Cadillac, died Monday, February 17, 2014 at her home in Cadillac. She was born on April 11, 1949 in Durand, MI the daughter of the late Dow Fredrick & Edna Louise (Fenner) Devereaux. She was a l967 graduate of Marion High School. She married Chuck Cruson on December 23, 1973 in Bradenton, Florida. Vivian was a cook and ran the kitchen for 17 years for the Wexford-Missaukee Meals on Wheels Program and was a well-known caterer in the Wexford-Missaukee area. She enjoyed reading, cooking with love, and family gatherings. She is survived by her husband, Chuck Cruson; one son, Randy Devereaux; two daughters, Linda Bartholomew and Janine Devereaux; two sisters, Pat Hammond and Donna Humphries; one brother, Dennis Devereaux; grandchildren, Courtney Christensen, Kaala, Onalee, Chantel, Tyler, & Jacob Deveraux, & April Sherman; and great grandchildren, Amara and Kevin Devereaux. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Bonnie Timlick, and two brothers, Bob & Keith Devereaux. Memorial Services for Vivian L. Steven Louis Underwood, age 61 of Ludington Michigan passed away unexpectedly at home on February 16, 2014. He was born on December 4th, 1952 to Evelyn (Underwood) Allen. He attended high school in Ludington where he would remain for his entire life. He was employed for many years at Great Lakes Casting where he would eventually retire from. In his retirement years Steve enjoyed spending time helping people wherever he could, playing pool at the Senior Center and enjoying time with his Brenda’s Harbor Café extended family. For nearly 20 years he was a proud member and was the 2nd Vice President of the Sons of the American Legion Post #76 where he was always willing to lend a hand to those in need. There are four special little girls who loved their Papa the most though. Caleigh, Cortny, Mya and Madi Thompson, his granddaughters. He had a special place in his heart for him. Steve was preceded in death by his mother- Evelyn Underwood, father-Henry “Red” Underwood, two brothers Laval and Larry Lefler, and one sister, Connie Marie Enbody and his “in-laws” Ted and Marlene Oleniczak. He is survived by his wife of forty years Cindy Underwood, his son Scott Underwood, his daughter Tammy (Gary) Thompson, his sister Karen (Joe) Hasslebalch and four granddaughters Caleigh, Cortny, Mya and Madisyn Thompson, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins also survive. She was born April 19, 1962 in Cedar Rapids, IA the daughter of LaVerne and Hester (Ray) Root. Wendy attended Mason County Central High School, graduating in 1980 after which she attended Michigan State University and West Shore Community College. Wendy married Alan Weiner on November 23, 2002 at Church of the Nazarene in Ludington, MI. She was employed as a Corrections Officer at Brooks Corrections Facility. Wendy had a love of animals, 4-H, swimming with her grandkids, talking with her friends and co-workers. In addition to her parents, she is also survived by her husband Alan Weiner; son Matthew Root; step-son Cory Weiner; step-daughter Jennifer Weiner; siblings Anita & Chris Brown, David & Melody Root, Michael & Christina Root, Amy & Steve Kott; grandchildren Ellianna Root, Rein Curtis. Joyce Ruth Ball died Thursday, February 27, 2014 at Oakview Medical Care Facility. She was born on January 23, 1918 in Pentwater, MI (at her grandparents Clindee Hotel) to Albin and Marie (Herr) Pearson. Joyce attended St. Simon School as a member of that parish. She married John (Jack) Ball and had two children, Jacquelin and James. The family moved to Mt. Pleasant where she and her husband owned Jack’s snack bar, Jacks Campus Grill and Luigi Pizza. Joyce also owned the University Beauty Shop and was an instructor of Cosmetology in Mt. Pleasant and Ludington Beauty Schools. She and her husband enjoyed young people in their restaurant business and in their retirement ran the Ludington Lunch Program at the high school. Joyce reunited with her high school sweetheart Max Radtke whose company she enjoyed for 30 years until he preceded her in death. Joyce will be remembered for her friendly loving personality. She made life fun getting joy out of the little things in life. Fishing was one of her passions. She loved being around people and “never met a stranger”. She will be greatly missed by her family. Joyce is survived by her daughter, Jackie (Jerry) Graham, and daughter-in-law Judy Ball, 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 8 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, John Ball, son, James Ball, parents, and 3 sisters. A memorial mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated with her family in Grand Rapids. He is survived by his wife of forty years Cindy Underwood, his son Scott Underwood, his daughter Tammy (Gary) Thompson, his sister Karen (Joe) Hasslebalch and four granddaughters Caleigh, Cortny, Mya and Madisyn Thompson, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins also survive. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to ask for donations to help with funeral and medical costs. The family has entrusted arrangements with Oak Grove Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Ludington.

Wendy Weiner age 51 of Muskegon, MI, formerly of Ludington passed away February 13, 2014 at home with family. She was born April 19, 1962 in Cedar Rapids, IA the daughter of LaVerne and Hester (Ray) Root. Wendy attended Mason County Central High School, graduating in 1980 after which she attended Michigan State University and West Shore Community College. Wendy married Alan Weiner on November 23, 2002 at Church of the Nazarene in Ludington, MI. She was employed as a Corrections Officer at Brooks Corrections Facility. Wendy had a love of animals, 4-H, swimming with her grandkids, talking with her friends and co-workers. In addition to her parents, she is also survived by her husband Alan Weiner; son Matthew Root; step-son Cory Weiner; step-daughter Jennifer Weiner; siblings Anita & Chris Brown, David & Melody Root, Michael & Christina Root, Amy & Steve Kott; grandchildren Ellianna Root, Rein Curtis. Wendy is preceded in death by her son Rodney Porter-Root. A memorial service will held at 11:00 AM Tuesday February 25, 2014 at Prayer and Praise Church, 509 N. Staffon St. Ludington, MI with Melody Root officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to the Weiner family, 4-H, or Hospice of Michigan. Samuel T. Ruggero, Sr. age 82 of Ludington passed away on Friday, March 7, 2014 at his home. He was born on July 6, 1931 in Detroit, Michigan the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Lucido) Ruggero. Samuel married Sarah M. Adams on March 18, 1954 in Detroit; she preceded him in death on August 3, 2005. He was employed with the City of Ludington until his retirement in 1999. Samuel enjoyed fishing and hunting and spending time with his family. He is survived by his children, Brenda (Terry) Smith of Warren, Samuel Ruggero of Ludington, Hugh (Kathy) Ruggero of Detroit, Robert Ruggero of Ludington, Terrie Ruggero of Ludington, Michael Ruggero of Ludington, Maria Ruggero of Holland, Thomas (Brandy) Ruggero, and Danny (Lynnann) Ruggero of Ludington; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-granddaughter. Samuel is preceded in death by his wife, and son, Joseph Ruggero. Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date. Nancy Karen Shepler age 69 of Ludington, passed away peacefully March 3, 2014 at home with her loving family by her side. She was born February 15, 1945 in St. Louis, MO, the daughter of the late Bernie and Blanche (Butler) Colson. Nancy attended Ludington High School with the class of 1964. She married Sherwood D. Shepler on February 16, 1963. Nancy was a retired teller from Safe Harbor Credit Union. She was a member of Beacon Ministries, enjoyed gardening and reading. Nancy is survived by her daughters, Sheila Shepler, Stacie (Ben) Lara; brother-in-law, Gordon (Pracilla) Shepler; grandchildren, Shaina (Rich) Shepler, Austin (Maressa Sarto) Shepler, Anson Lara, Aleighcia Lara; & great-grandchild, Eathen Huffman; numerous nieces & nephews and her special friend Sheryl (Tom) Anderson. She is preceded in death by her husband Sherwood D. Shepler and several brothers & sisters. A Celebration of Life will be held Monday March 10, 2014 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM at Oak Grove Funeral Home in Ludington.
