Jacob Donald Meszaros, age 20 of Bear Lake, died unexpectedly Monday morning March 24, 2014 at his home. He was born August 16, 1993 in Traverse City the son of James D. and Carolyn L. (Hilliard) Meszaros. He graduated from Bear Lake High School in 2012 and attended West Chore Community College. He was a cashier at McDonald’s in Benzonia. Jacob was an avid outdoorsman and loved the game of basketball; in high school he was the 3 point shooter for the Bear Lake High School High School Basketball Team. He is survived by his mother, Carolyn (Bill Lindeman) Hilliard of Bear Lake; father, James Meszaros of Cleon Township; brother, Zachary (Amanda) Meszaros of Houston, Texas; nieces, Hanna, Eden & Sadee Meszaros of Houston, Texas; grandparents, Carol Gentz of Onekama, James (Marian) Hilliard of Manistee; aunts & uncles, Jim (Lavon Jonson) Hilliard of Bear Lake, Gary (Beth) Hilliard of Walker, Kenneth (Christy Smith) Hilliard of Onekama, Marilyn (Willis) Jerome of Hamilton, Steven (Theresa) Hilliard of Bear Lake, Dianne (Greg) Norgan of Standish, Jeff (Cathy) Meszaros of Benzonia, along with numerous cousins. Jacob was preceded in death by his grandparents, Don & Mary Meszaros, and Art Gentz. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday March 28, 2014 at Oak Grove Funeral Home in Manistee with Deacon Anthony Nethercott officiating. Scott Ames, Jr.

Scott Ames, Jr. age 90 of Ludington passed away on March 25, 2014. He was born January 09, 1924 in South Lyon, MI the son of the late, Scott and Queenie Mae (Dibble) Ames. He graduated from Ludington High School and he proudly served his country in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII as a radio operator. Scott married Doreen L. Van Loon on December 28, 1946 in Ludington and she preceded him in death October 9, 2002. He was employed as machinist for Continental Motors in Muskegon, MI and was also a member of the Moose Lodge #637. Scott was a great mechanic and could fix any type of engine. He also like to fish and hunt in his younger years. He is survived by his children, Scott (Lois) Ames, Roger (Karen) Ames, Michael Ames, Larry (Kristen) Ames, and Lisa Parkinson; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; 2 sisters-in-law; 1 brother-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews. Scott is preceded in death by his parents; wife; 4 brothers; 3 sisters; 2 brothers-in-law and 1 son-in-law. Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life service will be held at a future date. Albert McWatt

Albert Edwin McWatt, 85, resident of Manistee, MI and former resident of Eastpointe, MI, died on March 27, 2014. He was born December 14, 1928 in Detroit, MI the fifth child of the late Robert and Margaret Duthie McWatt. He was graduated from Cass Technical High School in 1948 and was drafted into the U.S. Army on December 1, 1950. He served in Korea and was honorably discharged in 1952. He was employed by Hudson Motor Car Company and attended Wilbur Wright Technical School to receive his Journeyman papers. In 1953 he married Elaine Swanson and they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last year. He continued his automotive career as a model builder with American Motors and ultimately retired from Chrysler in 1994 after 46 years of service. Al was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Detroit. He served on the church council for many years and taught Sunday School with his wife, Elaine. He was a Scoutmaster and Little League manager while his children were growing up. He enjoyed attending Tigers and Red Wings games with his growing family and his brothers. He also enjoyed fishing, bowling, and golfing. His favorite was traveling around the United States with his family. After retiring in 1994, he and Elaine moved to Manistee and became active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Al served as usher, greeter, community kitchen volunteer, and helped out where there was a need. Al is survived by his beloved wife, Elaine; sons, Kevin (Joyce), Darrell, Kenneth; daughter, Lori (Terry) McGrath; and cherished grandchildren, Daniel, Kaitlin and Emily. He is also survived by his sister, Jessie Petroni (the late Pel), and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sister, Elizabeth Paulick (the late Erich), and brothers, George (Ruth) McWatt, and James (June) McWatt. A memorial service will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 521 Cypress Street, PO Box 157, Manistee, MI 49660 on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Philip Nordstrand officiating. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m. Final interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Luella Mae Sanderson age 89 of Ludington, MI, passed away March 21, 2014 at home in Grand Rapids, MI. She was born September 12, 1924 in Clare, MI the daughter of the late Ben and Lulu Henry. She married Robert (Bob) John Sanderson on November 25, 1957 in Grand Rapids, MI. Luella was a home maker, and enjoyed gardening, fishing and mushroom hunting. She spent the last year of her life in the loving care of her daughter Alena, son-in-law Scott Eggleston and grandson Jason LaMont in their home in Grand Rapids, MI. Luella was truly loved by family and friends and will be greatly missed. She is survived by a son; Gale Rouse of Jackson, MI, daughter; Alena (Scott) Eggleston of Grand Rapids, MI, step-son; Edward Sanderson, step-daughter; Diane Sanderson, brother; Dean Henry, sister; Susan Weage, 17 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and other family members. Luella is preceded in death by her husband; Robert (Bob) John Sanderson, daughter; Joyce Prys, step-daughter; Linda Herban, daughter-in-law; Judy Rouse, 3-sisters, and 5-brothers. Janice Schichtel

Janice Marie (Bouchard) Schichtel passed away Feb. 20, 2014. She was 74 years old. Jan was born Oct. 9, 1939 in Nahma, MI (a lumber town in the U.P.) to parents William and Loretta (Stratton) Bouchard. After the family moved to Muskegon, MI, Jan attended school there, graduating from Muskegon Catholic Central High School. After first meeting on Valentine’s Day at the insistence of Joe’s brother Phillip, Janice married Joseph Schichtel on June 25, 1960 in Muskegon and thereafter devoted her life to homemaking and to raising her four children. Jan had a sweet personality that endeared young and old to her. Her gift of hospitality welcomed many into her home. As well she dearly loved visiting friends and family here at home or as far away as N. Carolina, Alabama, California, Hawaii, and Alaska. She also enjoyed camping with her family and walking the many trails, especially along Lake Michigan’s shoreline. After her children were all in school, Jan worked at St. John’s Furniture Factory and later at several area supermarkets. She was a devoted member of the Cadillac Revival Center, where she was the church secretary and an elder for many years. She especially loved worshipping through music and song, and had a gift for writing poetry and lyrics. God’s spirit shined through her in everything she did. Janice is survived by her husband; her sons, Peter (August) Schichtel of New Castle, CA; Mark Schichtel of Charlotte, NC; Matthew (Hannah) Schichtel of Cadillac; a daughter, Kathleen Schichtel of Blowing Rock, NC; nine grandchildren: Christie, Jeremy, Thomas, and Christian of California; and Makayla, Laraiah, Ellian, Adrian, and Bristol of Michigan; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Her surviving siblings are Linda (Jim) Benedict, and Ronald (Pam) Bouchard of Muskegon; David (Beverly) Bouchard of St. Pete’s, MO; Mary Bouchard of Grand Rapids; and Jean Meade of Montague. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Edmond of Cadillac; sister, Carolyn, and brother-in-law, Roy Foster, and infant sister, Theresa, of Muskegon. A memorial service will be held at Cadillac Revival Center, 984 Plett Road in Cadillac, on Saturday, April 12th at 2:00 pm. Visitation with the family will be one hour before the service at the church. Rev. William Markham will officiate. Peter F. Von Sprecken age 79 of Ludington passed away April 9, 2014, at Spectrum Health – Ludington Hospital. He was born April 26, 1934, the son of Peter R. & Ethyl Von Sprecken. Peter attended Ludington Hugh School graduating with the class of 1952. He then enlisted in the U.S Army doing a tour in Korea. Peter married Jean (Swanson) on February 22, 1958 in Ludington at Emanuel Lutheran Church; they spent 56 wonderful years together. Peter was employed for the City of Kalamazoo as a firefighter for 25 years and also 10 years as Fire Chief for the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport. He was a member of Victory Trinity Lutheran Church. Peter’s hobbies included coaching girls fast pitch softball for many years and he loved sports of all kinds. He is survived by his wife; Jean, son; Jeffery (Chris) Von Sprecken of Sturgis, MI, daughters; Janna (Larry) Hensley of Centreville, MI, Julie Havenaar of Augusta, MI, 9 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brother; John (Elizabeth) Von Sprecken, brother-in-law; Gary (Arlene) Swanson, many nieces and nephews; one very special lifelong friend; Jerry (Marianne) Brown and his beloved cats; Bella and Lucy. Peter is preceded in death by his parents, brother Richard Von Sprecken and twin sister Pat Miller. A memorial service will be held Saturday April 26, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Victory Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor William Huether. Mark John Dufon, age 53 of Manistee, died Wednesday April 2, 2014 at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. He was born May 7, 1960 in Grand Rapids the son of John & Renee (Schild) Dufon. Mark married Teresa L. Earl on April 23, 1988 at the Church of the Open Door in Grand Rapids. He was employed at T&O Body Shop in Grand Rapids as their manager and most recently at Custom Sheet Metal in Free Soil as a heating/air conditioner/ventilation installer. He attended St. Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee. Mark enjoyed hunting, fishing, and shooting guns. He had also coached girl’s youth softball in Manistee. He is survived by his wife, Teresa Dufon; daughter, Danielle Dufon of Alma College; parents, John and Renee Dufon of Dorr, MI; and father & mother-in-law, Robert & Mary Earl of Hudsonville. A Funeral Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee with Father Chet Collins, celebrant. Nettie Belle Dye, age 86 of Manistee, died Thursday evening April 17, 2014 at West Shore Medical Center. She was born November 14, 1927 in Melstrand, Michigan the daughter of the late Arthur and Gladys (Smith) Fraly and was one of fifteen children. Nettie married Edward Virta on September 21, 1946 in Munising. She was employed at H.W. Jenks in Frankfort for over 24 years. She enjoyed going to the casino, working on her computer and doing word search puzzles. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Hamilton of Manistee; son, Donald Virta of Austin, Texas; 6 grandchildren, Todd, Rhonda, & Valerie Virta, Don VanCourt, Toby and Lisa Michelle Hamilton; 5 great-grandchildren, Devin, Alexandria, Ty Jacob, Cory and Katherine; and 5 siblings. She was also preceded in death by her sons, Derryl Virta, Edward Virta in infancy; granddaughter, Jody Lee Hamilton, and 9 siblings. The wonder who was Judith Ann Hoxie Thorp is no more. Wife to John, mother of Soluna, Mary Anjali (Larry) and Jayana (Jeff), Grandmother of Thomas, Lucy and Gabrielle, and friend to so many, she succumbed to the ravages of cancer, chemotherapy, radiation and most recently pneumonia the afternoon of April 25,2014. Frail of body from birth but endowed with an inimitable spirit and intellect, she embraced life’s joys and challenges. She was bright shining as the sun. She is also survived by her sister Patti (John), niece Michelle (John), nephews Mike (Erica) and Matt and cousin’s Jeri (Ray) and Greg (Neri). John Gramlich

John William “Bill or Red” Gramlich, age 77 of Manistee, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday April 28, 2014 at his home. He was born February 14, 1937 in Connellsville, PA the son of the late John W. and Mary Ellen (Richter) Gramlich. He retired from New Haven Community Schools after 30 years of custodial work. John was a lifelong stock car race (ARCA) enthusiast. As far back as the 1960’s, he was working at the old Mt. Clemens Race Track. He was most recently active with the Fitzpatrick Racing Team of Memphis, MI. Big John enjoyed cars, music, parades and people; people were no strangers to him for long. He is survived by his brother, Ronald L. Gramlich of Sterling Heights; sisters, Nancy (Edward) Bielat of Manistee and Mary Ann (Dennis) Day of Clinton Twp.; four nephews, two nieces and one great-nephew. He was also preceded in death by his nephew, Jacob C. Day. A Funeral Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 5, 2014 at St Mary of Mount Carmel Shrine in Manistee with Father John McCracken, celebrant. Visitation will take place on Sunday, May 4th from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Oak Grove Funeral Home in Manistee and from 10:00 a.m. until time of Mass at the church on Monday. Ida Marie Anderson Thayer, Age 73 went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, May 5, 2014. She died peacefully at home. Ida was born January 1, 1941, in Manistee, MI, the daughter of Carl and Audrey Anderson. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Charles Thayer. Ida is survived by her brother Major Carl John Anderson of San Antonio, Texas, and her four children Steve, Scott, Sheryl, and Chris. Ida was the proud Grandmother of seven wonderful grandchildren Luke, Megan, Ben, Alexandria, Daniel, Claudia, and Jack. After graduating high school in Manistee, Ida went on to college at Ferris in Big Rapids, MI, to obtain a BS degree in Pharmacology. Ida proudly served as a Pharmacist at City Drug in Manistee, then at the U of M Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI for the next 36 years. She enjoyed swimming, spending time serving at her church, crocheting, and gardening. Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 7, 2014, from 4-8pm, at the Muehlig Funeral Chapel, 403 S. Fourth Ave., Ann Arbor, MI, 48104. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, May 8, 2014, with viewing at 10am, followed by the service at 11am, both held at Divine Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2600 Nixon Road, Ann Arbor, MI, 48105. Following the Service a luncheon will be provided at the Church. Additional funeral services will be held in Manistee, MI, 49660, May 10, 2014, as follows: Oak Grove Funeral Home, 309 W. Parkdale Ave., viewing at 10am, and funeral service at 11am. Lawrence Vernon Anderson, age 84 of Kaleva, died Sunday, May 18, 2014 at West Shore Medical Center in Manistee. He was born October 20, 1929 in Bear Lake Township the son of the late William A. and Ida (Lindstrom) Anderson. He was a graduate of Onekama High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. Lawrence was employed as a Journeyman Electrician at Ex-Cello in Manistee as well as farming apples and cherries. He was a life member of VFW Bear Creek Post # 6333, the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1765 of Manistee and the Michigan United Conservation Club. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and loved watching baseball. Lawrence is survived by two brothers, Roland Anderson of Kewanee, IL, Ralph Anderson of Raleigh, North Carolina; his sister-in-law, Iris Anderson of Dayton, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Roy, Hayden, Don, Harold and Robert Anderson, and sister, Florence Kruse. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 23, 2014 at the Oak Grove Funeral Home in Manistee with Reverend Kenneth Hovingh officiating. Burial will take place at 2:00 p.m. in Bear Lake Township Cemetery with military honors conducted by the VFW Bear Creek Post #6333 Honor Guard. Leonard James Gavigan, age 87, of Ludington passed away on Wednesday May 28, 2014 at home surrounded by family. He was born on December 5, 1926 in Ludington, son of the late Owen J. and Josephine (Trepanier) Gavigan. Leonard graduated from St. Simon Elementary and High School and then earned his undergraduate degree and law degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee. He enlisted in the United States Air Force on February 12, 1946, serving until his honorable discharge on January 15, 1949. Leonard married Beverly Loomis on September 15, 1955 in Ludington at St. Simon Church. Leonard practiced law his entire legal career in Ludington and was actively involved in many civic organizations in the Ludington area. He was also an active member of St. Simon Catholic Church. Leonard is survived by his wife of 58 years, Beverly Gavigan of Ludington; 3 daughters, Kelly (Jim) Thomas of Ludington, Colleen (Jack) Willets of Grand Haven and Eileen Gavigan of Perrysburg, OH; 2 sons, Leonard J. Gavigan, Jr. of Grand Rapids and Kerry (Amy) Gavigan of Manistee; 9 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; brother, Dennis (Marge) Gavigan of Grand Rapids; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Eileen and Loretta; brothers, Owen J. and Michael. Cremation has taken place and the funeral mass from the Order of Christian funerals will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday May 31, 2014 at St. Simon Catholic Church. Sandra Kay Nelson (better known as Sandy), a walker, sunbather, canner, gardener, animal lover, especially her cat Susie – was also a loving, generous, kind Christian, passed away Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus in Grand Rapids at the age of 73. Sandy was an avid caretaker and was wholeheartedly involved with Emanuel Lutheran Church. She delivered sermon tapes to shut-ins, took meals to many seniors, and gave generously of her time to whomever needed her-especially her family. Sandy, who lived in her dream apartment facing Lake Michigan, always had a ready smile for everyone she encountered. Sandy was born December 24, 1940, in Ludington, MI, the daughter of the late Paul and Alice (Russell-Thorington) Lange. She attended Ludington High School, graduating in 1959. Sandy went on to marry Charles Nelson on August 5, 1961, at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Ludington. He preceded her in death on August 17, 2007. She is survived by a son; Andy Nelson, daughters; Ann (Marc) Kasley, Molly (Brent) Conklin; brother, Dennis (Laura) Lange; sisters, Yvonne (Dale) Howard and Sharon (Michael) VandenHeuvel and 5 grandchildren; Madeleine, Markus, Owen, Charles and William Sandy was also preceded in death by a sister, Donna Thomas and an infant brother, Gary Lange. Memorial Services for Sandra K. Nelson will be held on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Ludington with Father Mic Shriver officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00 AM until service time. Memorials in Sandra’s name may be directed to Emanuel Lutheran Church. Lois Marie (Wilke) Schneider, 82, of Ludington MI, entered heaven on June 6, 2014. The Celebration of Life service will be held on Tuesday June 10, 2014 at 11:00 AM at St. Paul United Methodist Church 3212 W. Kinney Rd Ludington MI 49431. Rev. Jon Pohl will be officiating. Visitation with the family will be held at St Paul United Methodist Church following the celebration of life service. Burial will follow the visitation at Summit Township Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Oak Grove Funeral Home. Lois was born in Mason County on August 28, 1931. Lois was married to LeRoy C Schneider on March 25, 1950; they were married 56 years. Lois enjoyed crocheting. She has supplied everyone she has ever known with an afghan or scarf. Many babies and nursing homes have been blessed with her crocheting. Lois was also actively involved with West Shore Youth for Christ supplying them with homemade bake goods for the kids who attend the Campus Life Clubs. Lois is survived by her 6 children Linda & Bill Lovell, Larry & Jill Schneider, Michael & Kathy Schneider, Bradley & Dawn Schneider, Genevieve & Paul Knudsen, Karen & Dave Sniegowski. 18 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. Lois is preceded in death by her husband LeRoy C Schneider. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to West Shore Youth for Christ or Hospice of Michigan.
