Charles Krueger
Charles Arthur Krueger, Sr., passed on to his next journey at the age of 77 on Friday, May 1, 2015 at his home in Bear Lake. The son of Arthur Cornelius Krueger and Grace Ann Roscoe, Charles was born on February 15, 1938 in Monroe, MI, and attended Monroe Public Schools. Charles married Anna Mae Guldi June 15, 1957 in Brookville, IN, and remained her loyal and loving husband until his passing. After marrying Anna, the couple moved to Petersburg, MI, and later to Erie, Temperance, and Monroe, MI. The couple settled for a time in McHenry and Crystal Lake, IL, and then moved to their long-time home in Erie, where they remained for 32 years, raising their children, before retiring to Bear Lake in 1995. Charles was employed as a truck driver for Roadway Express for the 15 years leading until he had to retire for medical reasons on February 15, 1995. Charles was a member of Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church for 17 years, where he sometimes served as an usher. Charles truly enjoyed the company of friends and family, and he was also a man of many hobbies, including hunting, fishing, woodworking, John Deere tractors, gardening, four-wheeling, playing cards, and following Detroit Tigers baseball. Charles loved animals of all sorts. He always had a dog in his lap, whether he was on a tractor, a four-wheeler, in a car, or just relaxing. He eventually came to love cats as well, and he would feed practically every wild animal that would come into his yard. In fact, Charles refused to let anyone hunt on his land, even though he was an avid hunter. Charles was also a very social man who loved hanging out with his coffee shop gang and cracking as many jokes as possible to make all the girls smile. He mostly enjoyed being surrounded by the love of his life, his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. He was always on the go, and he typically refused to sit still or stay in the house. He frequently spent time outdoors, tinkering with something and getting into as much as he could. Even when he would go downstate to visit his family, he would get into whatever projects he could outside of their homes, just so he didn’t have to sit indoors. Charles built numerous pieces of furniture in his wood shop for his family, and he loved setting up shop at the Copemish flea market. Charles was also known to frequent garage sales whenever he would get the chance. Charles is survived by his wife, Anna Krueger of Bear Lake; children Charles (Susan) Krueger, Jr. of Toledo, OH, Beverly (Dale) Mason of Toledo, OH, Terry (Terry) Burkholder of Lambertville, MI, Christine Krueger of Phoenix, AZ, Connie (Dana) Tolliver of Erie, MI and Mary (Mark) Guisbert of Newport, MI; 18 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; brothers Keith (Eileen) Krueger of Haysville, NC, Gary (Gloria) Krueger of Erie, MI, and sister-in-law Darlene Krueger of Boynton Beach, FL. Charles was preceded in passing by his mother and father; brothers Duane and Dale Krueger; Mother-in-law Ruth McIntyre and father-in-law Colin McIntyre; and one grandson, Shane Krueger. Anna and the rest of the family would like to thank Munson Home Hospice for all of their great care for Charles during his final moments, and for making it possible for him to rest at home during his final days. John Young
John “Jack” Stewart Young (March 24, 1944 – May 14, 2015) John “Jack” Young—husband, father, grandfather, and dear friend of many—passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2015 at his home in Kaleva, MI. He was 71. Never one to shy away from a fight, regardless of the outcome, he took on the odds on favorite and undefeated cancer in the same manner. Jack was born in Alma, MI on March 24, 1944, to John and Beulah (Garrison) Young. He graduated from Alma High School in 1962 and soon after married his high school sweetheart Gretchen on November 30, 1963. He retired from Central Asphalt in 2007 after 42 years in road construction. While they were working, Jack and Gretchen spent weekends at their cabin on the river enjoying the quiet life of Northern Michigan until building their dream home and moving to Kaleva after retirement. Jack will be remembered for his wit and his generosity, as well as his habit of making great friends wherever he went. Beneath a gruff exterior was a man who believed in pulling his own weight and self-sacrificing in helping those he felt were less fortunate. He believed in doing your best simply because you can with no expectation of recognition or reward. He believed if friends were a dollar it was better to have four quarters than a hundred pennies. But mostly he believed in his “people” and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with them. He is survived by wife of 52 years Gretchen, children Jay (Mary) Young and Amanda (Brian) Dodds, grandchildren Jessica Young, Leslie (Alex) Betzer, Rachel Young and McKell Dodds, sister Phyllis Bigelow, brother-in-law Robin (Ann) Miller and several nieces and nephews . He was preceded in death by his parents John and Beulah, sister and brother-in-law Joyce and Richard Hargrove, and brother-in-law Kenneth Bigelow. As per Jack’s wishes no formal services will be held. However, all are welcome to join us on June 27th from 2:00 till 4:00 PM at Jack and Gretchen’s house to laugh and cry as we mourn the loss of “one of the good ones” and to celebrate the times we had with him. While Jack would have appreciated the thoughtfulness of flowers, he would have been bothered that anyone would spend any hard earned gains on him. If it is your wish to make a donation in his honor he would have preferred it was made to those that are truly unfortunate. He always had a real soft spot for children, particularly those battling insurmountable odds of having a full and rewarding life. A couple of organizations that Jack would be in favor of are St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Big Bear Sportsmen Club’s Endowment Fund Youth Program. Feel free to share a memory or photo with Jack’s family at www.oakgrovefh.com. The family has entrusted funeral arrangements with Oak Grove Funeral Home & Cremation Center of Manistee.
