Alma Oleniczak

Alma Lee (Appelgren) Oleniczak, age 85 of Free Soil, passed away Sunday July 13, 2014 at Birchwood Adult Foster Care in Manistee. She was born September 2, 1928 in Grand Rapids the daughter of the late Dolores (Appelgren) Rasmussen. She graduated from Manistee High School in 1946. On January 19, 1950, Alma married Arthur Thomas Oleniczak at the Manistee County Court House; he preceded her in death on February 13, 2003. She was employed as a sales clerk at the former Kennedy’s in Manistee and also worked in the cafeteria at West Shore Hospital for 6 years. She was a voracious reader – sometimes staying up to all hours of the night just to finish an adventure. Although she was never far from her country home, her books transported her to places all over the world. Alma is survived by her daughter, Leanne Snay of DeWitt; son, Michael (Sarah) Oleniczak of Free Soil; and 3 grandchildren, Emily Oleniczak of Cadillac, Joseph and Andrew Oleniczak of Free Soil. She was also preceded in death by her step-sister, Sara Jane Newman, and her son-in-law, Jerry Snay. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2014 at the Oak Grove Funeral Home in Manistee with the Reverend Philip Nordstrand officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until time of service. Final interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Free Soil at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Alma’s name may be directed to the Arthritis Foundation or Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Manistee.
