Sophie L. Ruby, age 96, of Victory Township, went to celebrate with her husband in heaven on his birthday December 10, 2015 at Willowbrook Adult Care Home following a long illness. Sophie Leona Marek was born June 24, 1919 in Amber Township to Anthony and Mary (Motyka) Marek, where she grew up and attended Lincoln Valley School and Ludington High School. She married Robert G. Ruby on April 29, 1944 at St. Jerome’s Catholic Church in Scottville and he preceded her in death on December 31, 1999. Prior to entering the service she was “Donut Girl” at Kroger. She was a Veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army in the motor pool as an Officer’s Chauffeur. Sophie was very proud of her military service. After serving in the Army, she returned to the area working as a real life “Rosie the Riveter” at Seal Power in Muskegon making piston rings for air planes for the duration of World War II. She was instrumental in updating the Veteran’s Honor Roll in Victory Township, which included conducting research and acquiring the names of service men and women of Victory Township from: World War II, the Korean War and The Vietnam War. She made flag draped plaques and they still hang in the Victory Township Hall. She also made it her personal mission to contact every veteran she knew from Mason County to have their names inscribed at Oak Grove’s Veteran’s Memorial Wall. Sophie owned and operated the family farm in Victory Township with her husband. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Victory where she taught religious education classes for many years. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Altar Society, Sacred Heart Rosary Circle, Catholic Daughters of America Court Ludington #745, and a member of the Women’s Veterans Group of Mason County. Since the closing of Sacred Heart Church, she has been member of St. Simon’s Catholic Church. Sophie Ruby is survived by one son; George R. (Linda) Ruby of Ludington, three daughters; Mrs. William (Roberta) Gillet and Mrs. James (Rita) Copenhaver, both of Ludington, and Mrs. William (Theresa) Newberry of Kalamazoo, one sister; Josephine Martz of Ludington, brother-in-law; Donald (Luella) Marrison of Ludington, two sister-in-law’s; Ruth Ruby and Rosemary Sleak of Muskegon, 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one brother Henry Marek, and two sisters; Rose Rudnicki, Anna Marrison and brother-in-law Charles Martz. Mass of Reserection will be celebrated Monday December 14, 2015 at 3:00 PM at St. Simon’s Catholic Church with Father Wayne Wheeler celebrant. The rosary will be prayed at 3:30 PM on Sunday December 13, 2015 at Oak Grove Funeral Home of Ludington. The family will be present to receive friends for visitation on Sunday from 4:00-6:00 PM at Oak Grove Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Pere Marquette Catholic Cemetery in Ludington. Memorials may be directed to the Pere Marquette Cemetery or Hospice of Michigan with envelopes available at Oak Grove Funeral Home.
